Obama Administration's immigration announcement

Last week's preliminary immigration announcement from the Obama administration is NOT an amnesty.

The Obama Administration announced the creation of a work group to review cases that are already pending before the immigration courts. Those cases that are considered "low priority" may be administratively closed. Those that are considered to be a "high priority" will be prosecuted more aggressively. There are no rules or guarantees that a particular type of case will be considered a "low" or "high" priority.

2012 Diversity Lottery Results Voided. A New Selection Process is Planned

On Friday, May 13, the State Department posted an advisory on www.dvlottery.state.gov announcing that the results of the 2012 Diversity Lottery that were previously posted have been voided. A computer programming error caused results that were not random to be posted and those results are now invalid. Anyone who checked this website the first week in May and found a notice that they had been selected for further processing or a notice that they had not been selected, that notice has been rescinded and is not valid. The computer programming problem has been fixed and a new random selection process will be conducted based on the original entries for the 2012 program. The 2012 Diversity Lottery is ongoing and people who applied before do not need to (and may not) reapply. The results of the new selection process should be available on or about July 15, 2011. For details, please visit www.dvlottery.state.gov .

NEW VISA PROCESSING FOR U.S. CONSULATE IN SOUTH AFRICA

Beginning April 7, 2011, the U.S. Consulate in South Africa is introducing a new visa appointment system for non-immigrant visa interviews, which will mean fewer fees for applicants.

There are two important changes as of April 7:

  1. Applicants will no longer have to pay or buy a PIN number to make an appointment for a visa interview;
  2. Successful applicants may pick up their visas for free at a pre-selected DHL location. Applicants will retain the option of paying DHL for home/office delivery, or paying for expedited delivery to a DHL office.

Copyright registration
Theft of intellectual property such as original works of authorship including books, movies, songs, paintings, photographs, choreography, and website content, is a common occurrence. Copyrighting your original and creative work may protect your work from being used without permission. When you register a copyright you are designated the creator and owner of that original work. This means you are the only person allowed to reproduce, present or distribute the content. Having a registered copyright, gives you control over the reproduction, distribution and presentation of your work.

Trademark registration
Trademarks are vital business assets. They protect your business names, logos and symbols which distinguish your business from other like businesses. A registered trademark may prevent your reputation, goodwill or brand from being duplicated and/or damaged through unauthorized use. A registered trademark may also prevent unauthorized use of similar names or marks.
